Hello there! I’m Robert Alan Holmes from Niseko Investments. I’ve been based in Hokkaido for over 30 years, with nearly 20 years focusing on Niseko real estate, At Niseko Investments, we leverage our deep local knowledge and international flair to provide reliable and trustworthy services. Today, I want to address a serious issue affecting our beautiful region— the rising number of traffic accidents involving foreign drivers in Niseko.
Niseko’s Troubling Traffic Situation
In the two-month period from December 2024 to January 2025, the Niseko region (covering Kutchan, Niseko, and Rankoshi) recorded a total of 704 traffic accidents. This number is 50 cases higher than the same period last year—a stark increase that cannot be ignored.
Even more concerning is that nearly 49.1% of these accidents involved foreign drivers. Compared to 33.2% during 2022–2023, this significant jump suggests that many drivers unfamiliar with local winter conditions are struggling on our snowy roads.
What’s Behind These Accidents?
Most incidents have been property damage accidents, often caused by:
• Slipping on icy roads or making operational mistakes leading to collisions with other vehicles or snow walls.
• Deviating off the road.
• Multi-vehicle collisions, with two cases sadly involving personal injuries.
A major factor is that many foreign drivers, not accustomed to our snowy conditions, attempt risky maneuvers like aggressive overtaking and sudden lane changes without using turn signals. There are also instances where some foreign visitors, mistakenly believing that drinking and driving is acceptable in their home countries, have engaged in drunk driving.
These dangerous behaviors not only put lives at risk but also increase the stress and anxiety of local residents, making everyday life more uncertain.
A Call for Caution: Drive Safely!
Given these statistics and the growing concern among our community, it’s vital that everyone—whether a local resident or a visitor—takes extra precautions on the road. Here are a few key reminders:
• Slow Down on Snowy Roads: Adjust your speed to match the road conditions and avoid aggressive overtaking.
• Signal Your Intentions: Always use your turn signals when changing lanes to alert others on the road.
• Avoid Drinking and Driving: No matter where you’re from, never combine alcohol with driving.
• Stay Alert: Keep a close watch on your surroundings, especially in areas with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Safety is a shared responsibility. When we all commit to careful and courteous driving, we help ensure that Niseko remains a safe and enjoyable destination for everyone.
In Conclusion
The increase in traffic accidents, particularly those involving foreign drivers, is a serious issue for the Niseko region. It’s crucial that we all work together—locals and visitors alike—to promote safe driving habits, especially during winter when road conditions are most treacherous.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update. Please, drive safely and help us keep Niseko a secure and welcoming community for all.
